Week of January 23-29

56 miles and 9,000 or so FT of elevation

Ok, Strava makes me a little nuts, I am not talking about the pricing drama…strava doesn’t believe vert is real. It must have bought into that #, #vertisntreal. Because its not really feasible for me to drive 6 hours on a weekend to get some uphill running, we have started including lots of uphill TM miles. I ran about 5,500 vertical ft on the TM this week, but every time I try to add it to strava so I can keep track of it, strava gives me an error so I have to make a note instead of have it automatically calculate it into my weekly mileage. First world problems, but if I’m gonna pay for this app I feel like it should allow me to do this. It has a template for me to add in my vertical feet, but then gives me an error every time.

Anyway:

Monday is a rest day, but I did hike the dogs about 5 miles

Tuesday was easy 8 miles with a whopping 515 ft

Wednesday I drove to our local “mountain” and did a 9 mile workout: 3*12 with a whole 1,358 ft of elevation

Thursday was 6.5 easy with Mia in the AM, followed by strength in the PM

Friday I cheated. 6 miles with 3,600 ft. I was supposed to hike 6 miles on the TM, but after dropping Drew off at the airport I didn’t have a lot of time to hike…gotta get to work so I figured I had 70 min to exercise so I ran the 6 miles on the TM uphill at 10-12% grade. This wasn’t exactly a problem in the moment, but it would become one the next day. Also, technically I need to practice hiking, you can only get good at a thing if you do the thing.

Saturday I had an interesting workout. Again trying to get some elevation I did 2*30 min uphill on the TM, this time at 10%, which was basically what I did the day before, but without the 10 min easy between the two 30 min uphill intervals, then I followed it up with 14 miles outside on trail…by the end of this Friday/Saturday combo my legs were toast. Plus, I don’t know if this is a universal thing, but when I run uphill on the TM I do something weird with my left leg and pinch the tendon in the front of my foot. I figured it all out Friday night before the Saturday run, but I had an “oh shit” moment on Friday night thinking I wouldn’t be able to get in my run. Total was 20 miles and approx 4,000 ft between the TM and the “hills” outside.

Sunday was a quick 6 miles with some friends followed by dog socialization class.

We had a little blip in Mia’s training. Now that she is getting more comfortable here, she’s been here for about 6 weeks, she has started guarding random things at random times. We had our dog trainer friend Tracey come over and help give me tips on how to address it. She’s sensitive and nervous and wants to please so responding too heavy-handed makes her more nervous. She showed me a body pressure (by body pressure I mean walking towards her and getting into her personal space until she yields) Its very not aggressive and she yielded pretty quickly. She’s been happier and more confident knowing this boundary and feeling like I am taking care of her, rather than not knowing who gets to “own” space in the house. She’s a border collie, she’s smart, she’s testing boundaries and she seems to be dropping the guarding really fast.
